3D scanning
3D Scanning is the process of generating 3D computer models of real-world objects. 3D scanners use laser and/or blue light technology to capture accurate point cloud data depicting the physical form of the object being scanned. This technology is most commonly used for design and reverse engineering applications and can also be used to create watertight models that can be 3D printed.
Cons
Some objects require an illuminating spray
Tracking dots may be required for some geometries
Hard to capture small details accurately
Pros
Small to large size objects can be scanned
Color-modes available
Time-saving and efficient process
Common uses for this process:
Reverse engineering
Transportation design
Film and gaming industry
Study models
3D printing scanned models
Special properties only available on 3D scanning
Creating 3D models of unique, discontinued parts
Visualizing forms in CAD program
